Aim of the Project

Developing a material model of polymer concrete with the addition of by-products of coal combustion in energetics - the calcium fly ashes. Use of waste products in the construction industry, particularly in concrete technology is significant. The current state of knowledge and technology does not allow for full use of calcium fly ashes a component of cement concrete. In accordance with PN-EN 206-1 only additions of fly ash from conventional beds, that meet the requirements of PN-EN 450, can be used in cement concrete. One of the benefits of the project will be  showing that in polymer concrete , unlike cement, can be used waste products, not yet considered as less useful. The project is part of a strategy for sustainable development in construction (the use and recovery of waste, saves natural resources such as raw materials by the use of alternative materials, reducing landfill space), and it can also help to reduce the cost of PC. The scope of the research work will include among other things, defining the general desireability of calcium fly ash polymer concretes, including the choice and analysis of diagnostic properties for the selection of components, testing the effects of interaction of calcium fly ash with different types of resins, statistical-xperimental material optimization  (use of multiobjective optimization using the overal desireability function of material, statistical design of experiment and statistical analysis of results) and verification of the technical characteristics of optimized elements (including the analysis of changes in the microstructure using scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy).

Results

Technical characteristics of polymer concretes with different types of calcium fly ashes. Developed technical documentation that may allow producers of polymer concrete pre-cast elements - especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), - to produce the elements at lower cost by increasing their competitiveness on the Polish market.
